It’s that time of year again, the sphagnum moss in the bog garden is sporing. Though it does look like an aliens eye stalks poking up out of the moss.

@MaggieCi yep, takes ages to make peat, which is why we shouldn’t be using it in our gardens.
This one is sphagnum all the way down, it’s not made any peat yet. Must have been in there about a year.

Great news! “ Peat-free success for carnivorous plants adds weight to peat ban, says RHS”

I’ve been growing our carnivorous plants in sphagnum and so now I also grow sphagnum…
Moss for the win. Again.

WOW! 😍 Check out this stunning moss which is colonising new bog pools created by rewetting at our 2021 site. Sphagnum is very important for fostering peat formation in blanket bogs and can absorb up to 20 times its weight in water! I'm looing forward to seeing this vegetation develop at our newer sites currently under restoration management.
This work is funded by Peatland Action.

From genes to landscapes: Pattern formation and self-regulation in raised bogs with an example from Tierra del Fuego

"Raised bogs, when in a natural state, are among the most resilient ecosystems known; resilience that is provided by feedbacks and backup systems to these feedbacks.

A of Forests and Peatlands is a Carbon Sink, M. Mustonen

“In another peatland restoration project, Return of Sphagnum, we are, for the first time, testing the transplantation of moss in the restoration of a forestry drained . The aim is to speed up the return of peatland vegetation to the area under restoration ...

transplantation is thought to bring in bacteria that can reduce methane emissions from the peatland.”

moss is one of the most important and abundant groups of moss found in the Flow Country. Due to its ability to create by locking away huge amounts of carbon it plays a vital role in preventing further climate change.

Back garden plants coated in in the cold weather in this week.
Growing peat free in living moss, I'm hoping the sphagnum will protect the roots from getting too frozen.
