There's been a cellar spider on my bathroom ceiling holding an egg sac for a few days, and last night I noticed that the sac had become a little bundle of baby spiders! They've since scattered into a small swarm, so I'm glad I managed to snap a quick picture while I could (even if it isn't all that sharp - I think my phone focused on the shadow rather than the spider). #spiders #SpiderSunday #CellarSpider

Happy Spidertember in #Missouri - it's the season when most #spiders are giant, and the spiders own everything outside. That's not my grill anymore, it belongs to the spiders now.

There are tonnes of spiders in the garden at three moment and for the first time I actually saw an animal that had been "cocooned". Sadly yhe perpetrator crawled away before I could take a picture.

This fluffy furry ball looks ready to become spider wasp food. Also looks like an octopus, its limbs hanging limp under its globular abdomen, the thorax and head somehow hidden away. Despite, it’s all an appearance: notice a pair of limbs keeping a tab on silk strands, awaiting the signal that indicates prey—in other words, alert.

Do spiders ever fall in love?

Not with humans. With each other.

I’ve been watching (and filming) the most dramatic soap opera of long-bellied cellar spiders playing out on the ceiling over the past month. Safe to say I’ve seen some weird shit. I can’t explain what I’m seeing now.

After cavorting with two partners for a month, my lady mama spider has herself an egg sac—and a companion? The second partner has not left her side. He still dances for her sweet lovin but she’s kinda got an egg sac in her mouth soooo no. She’ll jab at him if he gets too close for comfort, but then she reaches out a foreleg and they touch tips, and she’s like “Hey. Chill. It’s ok.” and he’ll settle down again.

What is this? Clearly he still wants sex and isn’t getting any, but also isn’t leaving. She seems to want him to stay. Their body language still mirrors one another. Could they have bonded? Is he gonna be a daddy to the babies that 50/50 may/may not be his? Or…? 🧐
