Had an issue with my spinning wheel throwing her drive band. Figured the loose spokes were the issue. The only tip I could find on the internet was to try a bit of linseed oil, but uhhhh that just made it worse 😅

So, a bit of cotton thread to the rescue. Tied a bit to all the spokes to help secure them. I doubt this is the *best* solution, but she hasn't thrown her band again! Now I can actually get to spinning 😂

May I just complain, tho, about that gap on my bobbin where the singles aren’t filled in snuggly?? That’s not my fault… the Ashford Kiwi 2 is designed so that if you try to set the sliding hook to fill in that part of the bobbin, the hook and the brake band hit each other. It drives me WILD that I cannot fill my bobbins neatly. #HandSpinning #SpinningWheel

Just watched a youtube video about #spinning. Or about "how to learn to spin". Or about "how to make it really hard for yourself to learn to spin".

She got there - but boy could that have been easier ...

Don't get me wrong - I get the urge to use traditional methods and tools. And I think they totally glossed over the whole antique wheel problems thing (someone probably fixed that wheel up, so everything works smoothly).

Here's a much better picture of the spinning wheel. I took it all apart, gave everything a good dust and an oil, and replaced the drive band.

It could be refinished, but otherwise I'm super impressed with the state it is in. The flyer still has all it's original hooks! None are bent or missing.

I do have a small issue where I couldn't get this metal nub (bearing?) to move, so the bobbin is stuck to the flyer. Any tips for getting it off?

Returning to spinning has been good for my mental health, so I started a new braid of merino today.

First* chain ply off the wheel. I can really see both how much skill I’ve lost in my couple years away from the wheel, and how much skill was coming back just during the project. There’s a few wacky ugly yards in there, but most of it is good. #SpinningWool #SpinningWheel

*I’ve chained singles onto a plying ball and then spun, but this is the first time I was chain plying directly off the lazy kate onto the wheel

I might be adjusting the take-up a little late and adding a bit too much twist 🫢

I haven’t been using my wheel recently, and I’m thinking it would be good for my mental health to start a new spinning project. Pulled some very very random fiber from my stash and started something new.

I pulled out my lace whorl for this, so I’m not treadling forever to get enough twist. The pencil roving is quite thin. #SpinningWool #SpinningWheel

This fiber had been sitting in my stash for a little over 4 years. It's handdyed Corriedale from one of my favorite local dyers - Frau Wöllfchen. And Corriedale is one of my favourite fibers, so easy to spin, especially for fluffy woolen yarns.

#Handspun, part one

Pre washing that's about 720 m, the weight is 140 g (about 480 turns on the niddy-noddy). I expect some shrinkage, but that will be seriously fine yarn for a 3 ply.

There's a second bobbin of singles, waiting to be plied. Then washing and drying and then I'll know how much it really is.
