I'm really channeling some #spitedrivendevelopment energy into this #sideproject where I got ahold of every single conference proceeding/panel/abstract going back nearly 20 years to investigate how often accepted authors work with one another 🤔 🧐 (I'm an outsider, neither a PhD nor an established practitioner and I don't have the *right* connections)

Is there a guide for getting better at asking for money (outside of FTE salary reviews)?
I did a 5 minute presentation on an applicatjon I built thanks to #spitedrivendevelopment in two days. One of the questions I got from the audience was what was holding me back from doing more with it, and I said time and getting people interested.
I *also* should have said funding.
I love to work on side projects but I can’t justify building polished things without figuring out the funding side. 🤔 🤨

So far #spitedrivendevelopment is yielding some fun results to take my mind off work. From scraping, parsing, and ngraming ~3500 abstracts for a #structuralengineering conference spanning nearly 20 years, I can safely say that my rejected proposal was barking up the wrong tree.
#computationaldesign as a phrase didn’t appear even once.
#sustainability has appeared a whopping 63 times.
And that’s likely less than 63 presentations since the ngrams were applied on a single text bucket 🤔 😆

Haven’t done much coding for fun in the last two months between becoming a tech lead on a different project, vacation, and some horrendous jet lag. A lot of the stuff I’d like to work on takes up too much bandwidth right now.
But my friend gave me a really horrible web scraping and data viz idea I can probably execute in a weekend so…
Sometimes #spitedrivendevelopment is a good way to get out of a programming rut.
