She got the rotation right by noticing that if Athena is upright and forward then the Owl is inverted so it has to roll forward in order to choose either option and have either appear pointed forward and right side up. She researched the metal composition of the coin and found that at that time period it was very nearly pure silver so that the silver she used couldn't cause a reaction!
