Sitting at work, waiting for my class to start. Stinking migraine behind one eye but can’t take the strong stuff til I get home as it makes me sleepy. Not looking forward to the noise of the little munchkins today. And that’s on top of the normal Friday ferals they all seem to acquire heading in to the weekend.

What is the role of the sports coach?
I strongly believe in ecological dynamics and CLA — that athletes learn best when they interact with their environment (learn by playing & doing), less well when they try to impose a solution (externally provided, often by the coach) on that environment.
But development can’t always be left entirely to self discovery.

It should be about helping the individual to find _their_ best, not telling them what to do.
Coaches, not instructors!

UN Convention on the Rights of the Child & sports coaching — beyond “safeguarding”

Question for the coaches:
Do the children want to come back next week?
Do they still play the game in the playground or in the park?
If you can’t say “yes”, then are you stealing a part of that person’s childhood?

I think there could be more overlap between “sports” and “business” or “personal” coaching.
There is a perception (within sport and outside) that a sports coach wears a tracksuit and shouts instructions. We often do this (too often, probably), but we also work with human beings to help them achieve their (sporting) potential.

I have just completed a fascinating online course from the Open University, hosted by Future Learn — Sports Performance: Different Approaches to Sports Coaching. More on this over the next few weeks, I’m sure.
