This image of the central part of the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex was taken by the NASA Spitzer space telescope in 2008, in infrared wavelengths from 3.6 to 24 µm. Field of view = 2.1° x 1.0°.
Several young stars are visible in infrared light in the dark Lynds 1688 region.
Young stars with disk systems show up as red in this image. More evolved stars, which have shed their natal material, are blue.
