Hook construction is widely recognised as typical of early Piast hillforts or castles in the 10th-11th centuries, and was usually used to stabilise logs in the "grill" or "box" construction of ramparts. During our excavation in #Spycimierz we've found an exceptionally well-preserved example of a hook dating from the late 11th or 12th century. We hope that the forthcoming dendrochronological analysis will help to establish a more accurate chronology.

News from the #Spycimierz excavation of the 11th-12th century ring fort.
We are still working on the remains of the rampart. Now it seems clear that we are dealing with a so-called box construction (in Polish we call it "izbice"). Boxes were built from horizontal logs and filled with sand, stones or clay. In our case, a kind of stockade was added just before the wall.

After finishing this year's work on the #INHILLDAUGAR project in #Latvia, I'm back in #Spycimierz. We are excavating a rampart of a medieval (11th or 12th century) ring-fort, which was transformed into a motte-and-bailey in the 14th century.
