Modesty Blaise (1966) is a movie misfire that is still interesting enough to be worth seeing. Nowhere near as good as the novels or comics. All the movie's problems could have been avoided by sacking Joseph Losey as director.

đŸ“– The special issue of the journal Intelligence and National Security, dedicated to "Intelligence and Culture", includes a paper by Rui Lopes discussing the role of the fictionalization of intelligence in the history of European transnationalism, with a focus on the boom of spy films in the 1960s.

Movies about spies have been popular since the silent era — who could resist these stories of secret derring-do? CrimeReads reckons war is an especially fertile backdrop for espionage tales. Here's their list of the best spy movies set in WWII.

The main problem with Carol Reed's NIGHT TRAIN TO MUNICH (1940) starring Margaret Lockwood is that you're going to compare it to THE LADY VANISHES with which it has a lot in common. Not as good as Hitchcock's film but a decent train thriller.

Was watching this earlier: John Le Carre (and others) talking about snagging Alex Guinness for the role of Smiley in Tinker, Tailor... And how Guinness prepared for the role, interacted with director, cast members, etc. Fascinating stuff!

Ice Station Zebra (1968), one of my favourite Alistair MacLean adaptations. More a low-key espionage drama than an action movie but there's suspense and danger on the ice and under it.
Patrick McGoohan makes a fine spy hero. He gets good support from Rock Hudson and Ernest Borgnine.

After watching various spy movies and detective shows, I now realize that I have no skills a criminal or a spy would find useful. My relatives are safe. No one is going to kidnap them to coerce me into creating a project plan. #spymovies #70sdetectives

Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934), superior in every way to his ill-advised 1956 remake.
This is a tense hard-hitting spy thriller and one of the first movies to deal with terrorism. One of Hitchcock's most violent movies.
Great performances by all cast members with Peter Lorre the standout.

Fantomas (1964), first of the popular French Fantomas adventure/crime films. Superficially with a lot in common with the eurospy movies of the 60s. Certainly influenced by the success of the Bond movies.
Based on the early 20th century Fantomas novels.
Fantomas is one of the great diabolical criminal masterminds.
Great stylish fun.

The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934) marked the beginning of the extraordinary run of great British thrillers made by Alfred Hitchcock in the 1930s. His first spy thriller.
With Peter Lorre in great form as a sinister assassin, and the Albert Hall scene is one of Hitch's first great visual set-pieces.
Much better than his ill-advised 1956 remake.

Dean Martin as Matt Helm in The Silencers (1966). For me the Matt Helm movies are the ultimate movie comfort food.

The President’s Analyst is a delightfully oddball 1967 spy spoof/satirical comedy. And what is it satirising? The answer is, pretty much everything. a very clever very funny movie. The satire is merciless but because it’s directed so widely it’s rather good-natured. Everybody is crazy in this movie. Great great movie.

The #Andor series is a real gem for lovers of both #SciFi and #SpyMovies. It is astonishingly both like the #StarWars shows that came before but in its own way quite different. #DiegoLuna and so many fantastic actors and characters. I highly recommend it.
