I implemented (in #Haskell) a #SquareRoot #sqrt #mathematics #algorithm I found on maths stackexchange, O(N^2) for N output digits but needs only addition, subtraction, shifts, and multiplying numbers by a single digit, and is simple to perform by hand with paper and pen.

Do I know any maths people here who could clue me in to something I've unsuccessfully googled?
So I found on the web that you can figure out square and cubic roots without a calculator using something called "successive subtraction".
For a square root, you subtract successive odd numbers (1, 3, 5, 7, …) until you reach zero and then you found your square root.
For a cubic root, the sequence is 1, 7, 19, 37, 61, …), which I think I figured out to being “every 3 × n odd number”, n being the place in the sequence.
For a 4th/5th/nth root, I haven't been able to figure out any sort of regularity in the sequence (1, 15, 65, 175, …)
So, please tell me: is there a rule for these, and if so, what is it?

At the end of the 19th century, mechanical calculators already could be used to calculate square roots. This was performed using Toepler's method, which is based on the fact that every integer square number can be calculated as a sum of odd numbers. I show this in the video, using a 121 years old mechanical calculator.
