You've likely heard Google sold their domain service to #Squarespace. Having been with #googledomains for a number of years, I've transferred my domains to #Wordpress (wordpress.com). My needs are simple.

For a limited time they are transferring google domains for free. Ongoing cost is about the same as it was on Google. Was pretty simple to accomplish. Just an FYI.

Wonder when or if they'll sell Gmail?

With Google Domains being sold to SquareSpace, I'm curious if people in the #fediverse have a strong recommendation for an alternate registrar to transfer a domain to?

Google is selling its Google Domains business to Squarespace. Another Google service that gets eliminated. I hope they open up the .dev domain to other companies so that I can switch away.

Goddang, #Squarespace are buying #Google domains, and increase the prices. I guess I should buy a ".dev" while I still can for 12$/y instead of freaking 30$. But I still can't figure out if I'll be able to use it for emails without paying additional 14.40$ for "Custom email" feature, which makes it 27$ (and Squarespace do include "email forwarding")

Realized that in order to do what I want to do with my website, I'll need to upgrade my #Squarespace account to do it. But I don't have $500/yr to spend just so I can sell a pdf, host audio/video files, and take direct monthly donations. So that was a disappointment.
Additionally, the encroaching enshittification of #Twitch is forcing me to ponder alternatives. I think I've largely decided both #YouTube and #Kick ain't it, which leaves self hosting or #Owncast for other streaming options. Not too bad since I can just use this account to stream and direct people to my BuyMeACoffee for donations.
Still...I'm feeling disappointed. I've spent a lot of money on a website I largely don't use and a lot of time on a platform hellbent on appealing to advertisers over users. Feels like wasted time and money

Perhaps something for companies like #Fastmail, #Squarespace, or even internet/cell providers?

Your customers becomes _a bit_ more sticky, but they could still move their followers and followees any time (if they stop paying for the service, don't like the moderation, or something else).

#Vivaldi and #Mozilla are in this space as well - but their model is a variation: The function of their instances is to point people to the parts of their business that _do_ make money. (Also viable.)
