Takeaway #5 from my #SREcon talk on #resilience and learning from failure youtu.be/DGdtfB1eY98:
πΎ The open source tool Deciduous (https://deciduous.app) is a practical means to start implementing decision trees in your organization and day-to-day work immediately.
Takeaway #4 from my #SREcon talk on resilience and learning from failure youtu.be/DGdtfB1eY98
π³ Adopting decision trees lets you discover and explore the ways you expect your systems to behave in response to the unexpected (and expected stressors and surprises, too), which you can use to guide your decision making for design and process refinements.
Takeaway #3 from my #SREcon talk: https://youtu.be/DGdtfB1eY98
βοΈ #Chaos experimentation β #resilience stress testing in software systems β allows you to proactively uncover the hidden effects of stressors to your system(s) in a way that lets you be proactive about addressing them.
Takeaway #1 from my #SREcon talk: https://youtu.be/DGdtfB1eY98
π€Έ Complex software systems require SREs to become active participants in the system to provide the sustained adaptability necessary for resilience.
Takeaway #2:
π Itβs impossible to anticipate all the ways a system will behave, especially as it grows in complexity and as the # of possible interactions increase. Software can steal the concept of resilience stress testing from other disciplines to better understand these interactions.
The video of my #SREcon talk is live: https://youtu.be/DGdtfB1eY98
It's all about how SREs can align their mental models of a system with reality to sustain software resilience -- because SREs are a critical mechanism of adaptation in our systems.
If you're an SRE you're probably not like, waking up thinking, "How will I be the mechanism of adaptation today?" so I wanted to provide some scaffolding around the concept.
This will be a π§΅of five key takeaways:

My first #SRECon definitely reinforced my feeling that I should lean even more into being a polymath who cares deeply about the sociotechnical aspects of tech work. These are my people. Its always a joy when I can talk about the myriad things that connect to the technical side of the work and feel like my conversation partner follows it.
I'm also developing a much clearer perspective on the kinds of work I want to do next.
