#Paywalling access to standards isn't open - compared to that the anti-competitive #SSPL #license is open despite being designed to make it impossible to do any commercial offering with it (it's worse than #AGPLv3)...

I could at least understand if they said "Available for Licensing under #FRAND terms" if everyone gets to pay the same flat fee...

And whilst the #SSPL has it's own problems that disqualify it, a "#ShareAlike" provision requiring public code to remain #public could be added to any #FLOSS #license, not just @creativecommons licenses.

I.e. "Any used versions - released as part of a product or on their own - must have their #SourceCode released in public for everyone to access and reproducably build with no form of barriers!"

@ian The problem with all existing #Copyleft licenses is that they don't force those that take something to publish back their modifications.

#SSPL and #AGPLv3 didn't really fix that either...

@geerlingguy Not that I doubt that companies want to make #money and that they want to enshure that no #GAFAM - espechally #Amazon - just yoinks their code and make a better #SaaS out of it whilst contributing 0 $ or code back into the project.

Stuff like the #SSPL & #AGPLv3 won't fix the issues - in fact they'd rather worsen the situation, only empowering the rich that can pay lawyers.

I'm not just talking about "published source" like #Tarsnap's client, but also #AGPLv3 and #SSPL which are basically designed to prevent competiton - #GAFAM or not - from making any commercial product.

@uburgha Das ist der ElasticSearch Cluster hinter einem Graylog Logserver an dem ein paar sehr gesprächige Systeme hängen. Der bisherige Cluster ist zu klein geworden, also gibt es jetzt einen Neuen und wenn man schon mal dabei ist, kann man auch gleich auf OpenSearch umsteigen. ElasticSearch steht seit Version 7.11 unter #SSPL (die selbe Lizenz wie MongoDB) und damit kein echtes #FOSS mehr.

Out of curiosity: do you know who was the most prominent sponsor at #OSI when they refused the #SSPL?

Calling the SSPL a "proprietary license" on this ground is a bit misleading.

It's not an opensource license if and only if OSI gatekeeping is what qualify #OSS (hint: it doesn't, they always refuse this responsibility): they did not give their bless, because license proliferation, yadda yadda... but they blessed the #CAL license which was much more... "innovative".

MongoDB's license is a slightly modified #AGPLv3 but... OSI won't beat the hands that feed them, right?
