You’re right to be skeptical of . Most are bad for cities and even worse for taxpayers. But not all, and the arena planned for Philly could be one. It’s downtown, atop a transit station and would be built without subsidies. During the season it would bring “feet to the street,” making downtown safer. So who doesn’t like it? Leaders in nearby Chinatown. And … well, there’s everything else that make urban development so difficult. phillymag.com/news/2023/07/29/

@olivermantell Reminds me of early 1900s studies of "live load" for the engineering of sports stadiums. Glad they studied that!

A respected city watcher puzzles over the impact of on cities. Why are most a huge waste of land and gov’t subsidies … but a few actually improve things? Is it the sport? The location? Actually, there are three things that can redeem stadiums. One is a connection to transit, which reduces the blight of parking. Two is the number of games played there. (More is better.) Three is how well integrated it is into its surroundings, the result of good planning. governing.com/assessments/the-

A company has bought a large swath of land in a distant Atlanta suburb for a 10,000-seat soccer stadium and mixed-use development. Question for many: When will this company ask for gov’t subsidies to pay for its stadium? Good question. Here are two more: Why would it open a stadium in a place with no public transit? What impact would all those cars converging at one time have on local roads? ajc.com/news/conyers-agrees-to

“Hold on to your wallets, taxpayers”: Cleveland’s team is starting negotiations with local officials about its stadium. How well it goes depends on one thing: Are city leaders willing to tell the owners to accept their best offer … or take a hike? cleveland.com/opinion/2023/03/
