The 82-year-old who plays cricket wearing an oxygen tank. This is a lovely story. But it reminds me how much weaker my dad was when diagnosed suddenly with the same terminal disease in late 2019. He was too weak to have portable oxygen. He spent the last 2.5 years of his life hooked up permanently to an oxygen machine at home. And as an undergraduate went to evening classes at Kilrymont with accordionist Billy Anderson. Everyone else there was playing traditional Scottish tunes. St Andrews #castle in #Scotland has a rather excellent surviving mine and counter mine dug hundreds of years ago to get access to a besieged castle. The defenders had to stop digging their one and listen for the sounds of the enemy diggers, leaving several abandoned passageways. Eventually they burst through (the wee hole seen at end of this video) and a fight occurred underground. History is fascinating. #standrews #mine #tunnel

St Rule's Tower in St Andrews, a magnificent viewpoint well worth the climb to the top. The tower was built in about 1123 and predates the start of building work on the nearby (now ruined) St Andrews Cathedral by almost 40 years. After yesterday’s brief #StAndrews #outing (with very little #walking for me at least) my #neuro illness legs were very numb, needing 2 sticks even in our compact bungalow. 12 hours of #sleep later I’m back to 1 stick, albeit very slow. Expect more sleep! Trip was worth it though.

#Toppings #StAndrews have a locked glass cabinet - well I think it’s locked! - of their most #expensive #books. Many special #Tolkien #hardbacks. They also had a signed 1st edition 1st printing copy of #Babel that I’d spotted online this morning but was wilfully ignoring! The glass cabinet of books is high up, just round from the main back till, on the way to the travel books. I must not go look at it again! Many of the books in there were priced at £100 or more. #Bookshops #Fife #Scotland
