Today I learned that staphyl- and strepto- refer to whether #bacteria grow in clumps or chains, and -bacillus and -coccus refer to whether the cells are spherical or cylindrical.
So #staphylococcus means round cells that form clumps and #streptobacillus means cylindrical cells that form chains. So simple!
