I don't _need_ another #Fediverse account, but #GoToSocial is looking kinda neat and I _do_ have a #STAR64 board sitting around collecting dust... :ai_yaysuperfast:
#fediverse #gotosocial #star64
Another good on ramp to the #Star64 SBC.
First pass at a custom enclosure. The @pine64 #star64 has a custom SBC size. Unfortunately, this design blocks the PCI-E expansion slot. Needed to make 2 sets of standoffs. An inner set that mounts the SBC to the bottom plate and an outer set to join the top and bottom plates.
The USB-TTL converter cable needs to be grounded on the SBC. Ground the cable on pin 6 (see diagram).
You get by with a USB-TTL serial cable that has the following features: a PL2303 chip, UART 7 or 8 bit support, 1 or 2 stop bit support, odd/even/mark/space/no parity support.
Putty, minicom, hyperterminal, accessport, and screen all work fine.
From the schematic, you can see the serial pins for TXD and RXD are 3 pins down from the "top" (3 pins from the right).
The USB-TTL converter needs to pin into the SBC like in the photo. The transmit (TXD) & receive (RXD) lines are plugged in 3 pins left of the right-most pin on the SBC in the photo. The color of those lines will vary by vendor; double check the manual.
Setting S1804 to L/H corresponds to the values 0/1 for the "SD" entry on the GPIO chart. (SD means microSD)
Fishwaldo's Yocto Linux modifications made the boot possible.
This link streamlines the boot process: https://www.bortzmeyer.org/star64-first-boot.html
You'll need to get use the Windows Device Manager to get the USB-TTL Serial cables configuration data (COM port, baud rate, etc) in order to configure Putty.
The #STAR64 is:
1. smol
2. cute
3. Poised to go rogue and take over my network
And that's a good thing! 🤖
My #Star64 board arrived yesterday. I loaded the plasma image from here: https://github.com/Fishwaldo/meta-pine64
Definitely a work in progress but very cool. I'll try the Weston/Wayland image next. The only loaded browsers, Konqueror and Angle Fish, would start to load a page and crash. VLC crashed when trying to play a movie. Other movie players worked with software rendering only. Then I was out of time. Dam work!

The #VisionFive #StarFive as well as the #Pine64 #Star64 are both using the same 28nm RISC-V process that the #SiFive HiFive Unleashed used.
So, at best, expect quad core, 1.5GHz performance, not the bleeding edge.
More in the lines of engineering samples than what the #AlphaWave #ZeusCORE is professing to be with TSMC's 3nm process.
