If anyone else is trying to incorporate 3D into Traveller, which helps suspend disbelief in the setting, I suggest using light years instead of parsecs. It means tripling jump distances and ranges, because a light year is about a third of a parsec.
We're using two tech sub-steps for the jump ranges in between.
This sample route map illustrates the need for the extra elbow room. Players shouldn't have to figure Euclidean distance every time before they jump.

So I've been playing with the app Solar System Scope for Android. The interesting part of this app for sci-fi writers is when you start zooming out (the fun starts at 10 LY). Make sure you have constellations and their names hidden. Stars name show. You get stuff like this:

I like hard science fiction, where the science is as close to reality as possible.
I wanted to make 3 dimensional star maps of a hypothetical interstellar empire and its closest neighbors. I used the Hipparcos star catalogue and the mathematics of close packing of spheres.
Boy, did I go down a rabbit hole!
