A star for Christmas!

'Star-Map-Star'

I used 30 old acetate star maps to make an origami Bascetta Star, lit from inside by its own constellation.

Now sky mapping is all digital, so turning the maps into a star emphasizes their physicality.

It also plays on the idealized notion of stars in our individual and cultural memory.

The star is about 90cm across. Part of the #AstroArt project with University of Southampton Astrodome.

Negative Space.

From a collaboration with Southampton Astrodome (University of Southampton, UK). This is one of a series made using old acetate star maps as negatives.

The maps represent a rapidly receding era where starlight could only be captured by physical processes.

Working with these maps really brought home the technological progress made in astronomical surveying over my lifetime.

Wow! I wish I could have become a real scientist so I could create marvelous maps like this!

I make maps for science fiction writers to assist them. I am muddling along with the Hipparcos star catalog,

Since scifi authors are interested in flight paths for their starships I did auto generation of paths. What worked best was iterating through the list of star systems ( singles, binary, trinary) and creating a path between that system and 2 closest neighbors.
