Star trail over Boab.
This is a stacked image that uses a sequence of shots to capture the movement of the stars. I'm using what I call the "bright frame" technique where I compose and capture a silhouette at sunset, facing to the west, then leave the camera in place to record the stars moving around it.
You don't even need a super fast lens to get a result. See my website for a full explanation!

This #picture is a #startrail taken from the dome of the swiss "Euler" #telescope at #LaSilla #observatory, in #Chile. The #camera was on the alt-az mount so it was tracking the stars horizontally. I tried to produced an artistic "raining star trail"... but I failed.

This #photography is a composite of 10 long-exposure frames that are averaged to smooth out all #tourists and pigeons !
This is the same technique as for a #starTrail, but during the day. Done with the StarStaX+DxO PL5 software.

#Spectacular #circumpolaris #starTrail captured a couple weeks ago by Dario Giannobile from the #Etna #volcano in #Sicily, #Italy. #Night #photography in volcanic places is really challenging because #basalt is pretty #dark.
This #picture is just #awesome because the foreground is really clear, enlightened by the #Moon #light, which give some great perspective.

When I'm observing with large professional #telescopes, I always take the opportunity to capture #photography of the #night #sky. I drop my #camera somewhere in the #observatory, set the timer so that it takes #pictures automatically while I am busy hunting for #exoplanets. Before going to sleep, I collect my footage and process them while I rest.
This is an exemple #startrail I did 10 years ago from #ESO's #LaSilla observatory 🇨🇱, maybe one of my favorite

Time for a night time photo? I think so. In all my life I’ve ever taken one photo of star trails. I went out hoping to catch some meteors and drove down to Santa Pola.
This is the result.
I’ll have to try it again one day.
