Fred Phillips was also the chief makeup artist for the #StarTrekTOS
series, but the higher budget of #StarTrekTMP gave him a chance to create aliens that weren't just humans with a different skin color (like the green Orion women or the frankly Orientalist Klingons of #TOS). #startrek

I always wondered why Fred Phillips' background alien designs for #StarTrekTMP look so strange.

There was just something... off... about them compared to later makeups, even in the other 1980s movies.

Then I realized: the makeups have generally flat colors but incredibly high relief.

Stuff that looks great in high contrast (eg, monochrome) but less so in color.

They look so strange because Phillips was probably using vintage makeup techniques he learned for black-and-white TV! #startrek
