On the level: Paramount+'s vice grip on Trek is slipping and CBS would do tremendous good offering at least 1-2 of the Legacy Series (on rotation if they must) outside of Para+. (Pluto and Heroes/Icons doesn't count, they're aired linear and not on demand.) But they won't given their international playbook resembled the same deal (See SNW premiere in the UK via a partner service scuttled once Paramount+ launched.)
For those who didn't notice CBS quietly yanked all rights to air Star Trek off of other services. The last series exited this spring from Netflix and Hulu. You can't watch Star Trek on demand in the US without subbing to Para+ now. (Amazon of course sells rentals or PPV seasons, so that still works.)
And Star Trek is supposed to be Paramount+'s vanguard series. Apparently Prodigy's viewer counts weren't the issue, it just wasn't watched more that the other four were. If Star Trek series aren't safe from a tax write-off if they're not home run hits, then what is?
Missed Info: The Prodigy cancellation sucks (I was watching all of it) but the prior "production bandwidth" for Paramount+ new series was five at a time. And it was realized. Picard and Discovery series ends were all planned before Prodigy was cancelled, so that's three series down.
With Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks being the only new Trek left, that means Star Trek: Starfleet Academy can begin... (Already underway) and now at least one other show. (Section 31 series is now in movie form, mainly because Yeoh is super busy. Perhaps that pilot idea Matalas teased for "Star Trek: Legacy" isn't too far away.)
So admittedly, trimming back on the budget for show #5 by skipping it until the bust times are through seems prudent in the era of cutbacks. But the rugpull still happened, and none of the series seem safe whether we watch them or not now. Gizmodo got that much right.
If they can't sustain five shows, or even 2-3, maybe shooting 20-25 episodes of one series may need to make a comeback. Seemed to work in the 1990s. And there's plenty of material in Trek lore to mine through.

#ParamountPlus has officially greenlighted the next series in the #StarTrekUniverse -- #StarTrek: #StarfleetAcademy. The series has been in development for the past year, and may have originated in a #StarTrekDiscovery episode with Tilly joining the Academy as an instructor. Perhaps she will be part of the cast but nothing else is known at this time except that production will begin next year. #television #streaming
