Per the St Augustine and Maritime Museum, the lighthouse was the first in North , even though several, wooden lighthouses had been built by the French and Spanish, this light was the first serving as a lighthouse.
It has been lit since 1874, and was automated in 1955.
It’s open to visitors, who can climb the if they wish.
