The Spanish built their first permanent #Lighthouse in #NorthAmerica in St Augustine, #Florida around 1737. Eventually the territory of Florida changed hands until it became part of the United States.
The US maintained the lighthouse, and built a new tower and keeper’s house in 1874. The #tower was again reconstructed in 1955 and converted from coquina stone to #brick.
The #Light was first made electric in 1936, and was automated in 1955.
The lighthouse is still working, and is open for the public to climb its steps to the top at 165 ft (50m).
The lighthouse and its grounds are maintained by the St Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime #Museum.

It has been lit since 1874, and was automated in 1955.
It’s open to visitors, who can climb the #tower if they wish.
