St Columba's footprints, found on a rocky outcrop overlooking the shore at the southern end of the Kintyre peninsula near Southend. 1,426 years ago today. St Columba died in the monastery he had built on the island of Iona on 9 June 597. It would subsequently become one of the most important in Europe. A VIRTUAL TOUR OF SCOTLAND
While on Iona we visit Iona Abbey. The building you see today was restored from a ruin in the years from 1902. It has origins that date back to the founding of a Benedictine monastery here in about 1200 on a site not far from a monastery founded by St Columba over six centuries earlier.
