Today, our two immediate associations to syphilis are genital sores and a very slowly developing disease leading to the death of many untreated victims only after many years. However, when syphilis was first definitely recorded in Europe in 1495, its pustules often covered the body from the head to the knees, caused flesh to fall off people's faces and led to death within a few months. By 1546 syphilis had evolved into the disease with the symptoms so well-known to us today.

That was the location of the infamous footage of the pile of burning books with a large crowd tossing more on that gets shown every time someone references #Nazi #BookBurning.

It also offered a variety of other services, including access to #contraception, #counselling and treatments for #STDs and #alcoholism.

It was led by a Jewish physician and researcher called Magnus Hirschfeld.

History may not repeat, but it does sometimes rhyme. These are disturbing times. It is time for more people (esp those not immediately threatened) to be explicitly #antifa, which simply means anti-fascist, and it includes a wide variety of actions and strategies, not only confronting fascists on the streets.
