I’ve been playing games with a steam controller for a couple weeks, and I’m kinda disappointed in just how much a mixed bag it is. Everyone says it’s so easy, and it sorta is.. but not all the time.

I’m a ardent console gamer because i want to play a game and for it to just work.

That is unfortunately just not the experience I’m getting 😕 i don’t want to be editing ini files.. it should just work.

oh heck I didn't think about the having trackpads instead of sticks means you can just /shove it in a bag/ without worrying about the sticks getting messed up

damn I kinda want one now

Valve should make a Steam Controller 2. I still have my Steam Controller, but I'd like it to have the full button set the Steam Deck has. LR4/5, a right stick, and slightly smaller trackpads.

I'd just really like to be able to continue playing certain games on my PC with the same exact control scheme I use on Deck, but with the Steam Controller's comparatively limited input... no can do.

This controller has blown me away and every controller manufacturer needs to steal this idea.

It seems that as of the latest update, Steam considers my Steam controller to be an "external" device and no longer reliably accepts input from it. If I open Big Picture mode, my Steam controller may stop working altogether at any moment. Are any folks working on an open-source solution to continue the usable life of the device?

I bought the $650 in March of 2022 which means I got it in October. I worried the whole time I was waiting that I'd made a mistake. That I would hate it. That it would be uncomfortable or too heavy.
I wasn't sure I'd even go through with the purchase when I got the email that it was time.
But I did.

I love it. The biggest limitation is the battery life, but if you are playing in bed, you'd be able to have it plugged in.

It's bigger than you think if you haven't seen one in person. It looks too big, but once you wrap your hands around it, it feels perfectly designed.
I have no problems using both analog thumbstick, the XYAB buttons, both touchpads, the top buttons, or the triggers. The back paddles, back buttons are a little finicky, but you can sort of squeeze them by closing your fingers in and that works. It's easier than pushing the buttons, too. Also, the D-Pad is little awkward for me to use. Finally, the touchscreen itself is difficult to use because you really need both hands to hold the
You can use the touchpads to access the on-screen keyboard, similar to how it worked with the old . So you don't have to touch the screen to type, but it is faster if you do. Wiggling the pointer around to the letters you want and gently depressing the touchpad to type it is difficult to do quickly.

Game-wise, it's wonderful. I've put at least 150 hours of gaming into it, most from my recliner, since I got it.
I've done minimal fiddling with the settings. The only settings I changed permanently was limiting the FPS instead of 60. That saves some battery without making games look terrible.

I do not regret purchasing it. My thumbs regret it. I'm getting Nintendo thumb like I had as a kid, but it's worth it.
I'm not sure what kind of games you like, but I have played Roguelites, Medtroidvania, ARPGs, and RPGs without issue. It can run FPSes but I get motion sick.

In my experience, these are great on which means no complications and controls are fully integrated:

I want to talk about for a second. I have that game on PC / , but there is also a mobile version. I've tried playing the mobile version on my tablet and it was awful. It was unplayable for me because the touch controls were so soft. But on the , it is fantastic. I am able to deftly weave around enemies in a way that was impossible on the tablet.

Here are games that worked fine for me but weren't fully integrated, so prompts for keyboard or having to rely on touchpad and triggers instead of keyboard and mouse:

is "meh" just because it's better with the D-pad and that is hard for me to comfortably use.

There are some other puzzle games and adventure games that were fine to play, but you are using the thumpad as a mouse and the triggers as mouse buttons. It takes a little bit of getting used to.

I have terrible nearsightedness. I hold the about 4" from my face to play it, which has the side effect of making the screen seem to be absolutely gigantic.

@solidsanek Configured in that way I find it can be very useful for those few games with mouse-only launchers or with broken controller support...

Then again, I'm one of those people who loved the , so...

did anyone get the to work on the using the native mode (with dongle)? trying to see if it reduces interference that I seem to be experiencing when connecting 4 controllers at once to the Deck, 2 generic bluetooth ones and 2 steam controllers.

@jdgumby Yes, on , playing with my on this 2020 Lenovo ThinkPad Extreme Gen 3 with an Nvidia GTX 1650 Ti MaxQ. I didn't expect this kind of a performance from this setup either.

So... Installed on my and @kde install.
Works like a charm with a few niggles.

I still have no idea how to set the for (GoW titles)

And of course - decided that it's a good idea to index the Emulation dir on the PC tower. It still surprises me how indexing can bring beasts of machines to their knees 😄 It reaaaally likes to peg the machine and cause stutters to the extreme 🙂

Moral of the story - keep an eye on what is doing 🙂

Possible Steam Controller 2 theverge.com/23499215/valve-st

Would love to see Steam Controller 2 - I love mine, and after they were discontinued I picked up a spare (safely boxed a a backup for now). I get that they're marmite, and now Steam Input allows any controller to have the same mapping facilities, but after gaming for 30+ years using only keyboard or kB+mouse its the only controller I've felt comfortable with. Bring on SC2!

I hope this happens! I use both and controllers and the trackpads on the Steam are far superior for aiming, and things that need mouse pointer movement. Nothing like it out there.
