On this date in 1816, #shipbuilder William H. Webb was born in #manhattan. After saving his father’s failing #shipyard, he turned it into a #shipbuilding power, constructing #clipperships #steamships #warships etc. After the #civilwar he closed the shipyard and founded the Webb Academy, now the #webbinstitute in #glencove #NewYork Webb died in 1899 and is interred in #woodlawn #cemetery in #thebronx. Started watching #1899 on #Netflix. Can’t say much about the story yet, but the CGI work is fascinating.
Sidenote: was the #coal used to power large #steamships really shovelled manually into the multiple #boilers? I know manpower was cheap, but surely some mechanical system would have been more reliable and easier to control? (Apparently not, says this answer to the same question: https://www.quora.com/Why-wasnt-a-system-developed-to-automatically-feed-coal-to-warship-steam-boilers-rather-than-being-dependant-on-men-and-shovels )
