Donald Fagen - The Nightfly

When this came out in 1982, I wasn't quite sure what to expect - Fagen without Becker?

But, as we all know now, it was what you'd expect: a significantly jazzier and less cynical version of that music; almost a yearning for Fagen's youth.

Anyway, played beautifully as you'd expect, with great songs. My old Japanese pressing is on the treble-y side, but super quiet.

In honor of seeing two completely unrelated #SteelyDan toots as neighbors on my timeline, let me offer a third:

I saw Father John Misty on Thursday, and it was quite strange to see the level of apparently sincere and fanatical devotion among fans of an act dedicated so thoroughly to irony.

Steely Dan was the best analogue I could think of, but maybe I was influenced by one of the guitarists with long hair and glasses that could have stepped out of an SD band photo.

Starting it out by listening to #SteelyDan to see where the day takes me.

As if I didn’t already know.

For the record, I decided not to post a #SteelyDan track right now. Nevertheless, Brooklyn owes the charmer under me.

When Josie came home she arrived late. Her flight was canceled and she had to hop another flight with a long layover at JFK.

Sleeping in the terminal put a crick in Josie's neck. And she thinks she caught the stomach bug from the passenger across the aisle.

We were so excited for Josie to come home. It's a bummer we didn't get to see her.

Steely Dan - Pretzel Logic

Here's where the turn came: Steely Dan morphed into a studio project, hiring the best folks in the business to put across increasingly jazzy tunes.

While it's not my favorite, it's definitely one of their best. This new AP edition has received some negative reviews, but it's immaculate, and the sound reflects similar issues to my old LP, with maybe a tad of muted top-end and a little muted drum sound. Still good.

1985 European pressing.

I always keep going back to this album, it's one of my favourites. It's silky smooth and comfortably warm, a hint of what would come later. Also very cool that Becker of #SteelyDan joined as member, especially since China Crisis were very inspired by them.
