At the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries , there was a concerted effort to show that a camera could make art.

So...pictorialists, created photos that look like paintings and charcoal drawings.

Edward Steichen's very familiar Flatiron photo, is one such example. Things are hazy, a little difficutl to see. Steichen and others could take clear, sharp pictures, but often they chose to create photos that work like memories not recordings.
