By dusk of the third day, the doppelganger caught them. Its stentorian voice commanded the group to halt, and they became frozen in place. Kane survived by pure luck, having fallen into a bush when the spell stole his mobility. He watched in horror as the doppelganger drained the life from the scouts, leaving behind cracked, petrified husks. It shifted through each new face before deciding on a favorite to wear, then walked away.

Deacon Finney’s deep rumble and the high voices of 24 women and children joined in a drone that shook the ground as the small church collapsed. Later, they sifted the rubble and found no remains.
