Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the theory of Punctuated Equilibria, published by @niles_eldredge and in 1972.

Useless Quote for 27 Feb:

"Look in the mirror, and don’t be tempted to equate transient domination with either intrinsic superiority or prospects for extended survival."

Russel's 1932 essay reminds me of a 1979 work by : . The whole essay is in my 1988(?) copy of The Practical Stylist. For years, I thought the few lines I remembered were from a piece by James Baldwin. The lines said to worry less about the characteristics of great brains like Einstein's and more about the conditions that have great brains dying in cotton fields. My guess is that old liberal arts books of thoughtful writing could ease recent "AI" worries.

The Problems of Evolution as a ‘March of Progress’

The ‘March of Progress’ is one of my pet peeves. It's wrong, leading to misunderstanding evolution.

The ideas of this school are unknown to us; we do not even recognize the names of the major protagonists. “What gets measured gets managed — even when it’s pointless to measure and manage it, and even if it harms the purpose of the organization to do so.” -- and
"It’s dubious and dangerous, Drucker is saying, to take what’s measurable for what’s important. But he’s also saying something much more radical, even subversive: Some things that can be measured shouldn’t be." -- on the ? maybe too.
