(11/11) If you want to learn more Steve Goulding's career as a British drummer and a key facet of the whole pub rock movement, please peruse the following! Hope you enjoyed the thread.

(10/11) (I'm embarrassed to say that I know nothing about the Mekons, so I'm including another great song of theirs and putting them on my to-do list.)

(9/11) Goudling's longest tenure on a band has been his work with the Mekons, which he joined in the mid-1980s and with whom he is still associated with to this day. While this means he wasn't on their earliest songs, like "Where Were You", it does mean that he played on some of their most critically acclaimed work: 1989's The Mekons Rock 'n Roll and 1991's The Curse of the Mekons. Here he is on "Memphis, Egypt."

(8/11) What else? Looking through his Discogs entry, he played with the Thompson Twins on their 1986 live album, which was a "Fan Club" only record released in *very* limited quantities. It's hard to say, but this might be him playing on their Into The Gap concert film. Sadly, Goudling was too late to participate in their 1985 Live Aid appearance, which weirdly featured Nile Rodgers of Chic and Madonna on backing vocals and tambourine!

(7/11) Also bizarre is that, according to one of his bio pages, he "played" drum tracks on several Roxy Music videos. I say "played" because he's not on the track, just in the music video playing for the benefit of the camera. Here's him syncing up the drum track for the very trippy "Avalon" video: the audible drums are played by Andy Newmark.

(6/11) Bizarrely, Goulding's session work includes the classic "Let's Go To Bed" by The Cure. I can't find *anything* online about why he was on this track instead of Lol Tolhurst.

(5/11) Goudling continued recording with The Rumour and as a session musician across Britain. The reggae influences audible in his work is probably what led him to work with Desmond Dekker on Black and Dekker, which includes one of the many versions of the classic "Israelites"

(4/11) Also key to Elvis Costello's album - and a whole era of British music - was Nick Lowe, who produced both the My Aim Is True album and "Watching the Detectives." Lowe had also been part of one of The Rumour's predecessors, Brinsley Schwartz and would go on to have his own solo career. Several of those Nick Lowe solo pieces were co-written by - you guessed it - Steve Goulding, including the hit "(I Love The Sound Of) Breaking Glass"

(3/11) Originally released as a standalone single in 1977 (and often packaged on re-releases of the album My Aim Is True), "Watching the Detectives" used a different band than that of the album. While the album tracks were played with the American band Clover - later to become "The News" part of Huey Lewis & The News - the single was recorded with members of Graham Parker's band, The Rumour. Steve Goulding had been The Rumour's drummer from the outset, premiering with the rest of the band on the album Howlin' Wind.

(2/11) I love Bowie, but my dad shared that performance for a different reason. Because Bowie didn't have a live band at the time, Carlos Alomar helped him put together an ad hoc band of New York musicians that included Steve Goulding on drums. The very same drummer who played one of my absolute favorite tracks on Elvis Costello's "Watching the Detectives."
