People are usually surprised when I tell them that Steve wasn't a huge follower the #GratefulDead until he actually started playing with those guys. He liked them well enough, but he was more interested in other bands and artists. He did, however, cover this tune with the #GoodmanBrothers in the mid 70s, and always killed.

Some years later I happened to see Jimmy at the Miami airport and struck up a conversation. He remembered the gig well, and was particularly impressed that the band gave him a full cut of the take for the night.

As part of his mourning Steve recorded this piece that he called Max’s #Blues.
He wrote a long paragraph describing the piece. I can’t recall much of it, but I remember that he said the second part was Max drifting through the ethers, ending with suddenly being swept up into oneness.

Love the reunion of Steve and #AlphonsoJohnson. Steve tells the story of being in the middle of a long #improvisation section with him. At one point he thinks yo himself “huh, this kind of sounds like Weather Report.” Then he looks over, “oh, right.”
