Microsoft spent $250m marketing Windows XP (2001), including launch events in 63 cities across the world. The UK launch took place at the Royal Festival Hall, London. It was hosted by Microsoft’s then-CEO @Steven_Ballmer@twitter.com, who prophesised that XP would be “the Windows to beat”.

Contrary to popular belief, this isn’t a Blue Screen Of Death - its correct name is a Ctrl-Alt-Del Screen. Introduced in Windows 3.1 (1992), it was shown if a user pressed Ctrl+Alt+Del with no unresponsive apps to kill. It was coded by Raymond Chen, with text by Steve Ballmer.

In 2011, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer & Nokia CEO Stephen Elop announced a partnership that would see Nokia - the largest phone manufacturer at the time - adopt the Windows Phone OS on its devices. The venture was unsuccessful: Nokia fell from #1 to #10 in phone sales by 2013.
