Most (if not all?) religious groups certainly have issues, but IMHO that doesn't necessarily make them cults. However, a close look at court cases and interviews with 2nd/3rd-generation former JW, CS, UC members, many who require years of therapy, show how harmful those groups are. Mind control, denial of education opportunities (JWs) and even certain lifesaving medical treatment are well-documented. Dr. #StevenHassan has written extensively on such cults.
