Cause look, every discipline is about putting a worker one step closer to being on the street. Workers sometimes mess up. Capitalism is a system of oppression and employers are systemically incapable of issuing just discipline. But sometimes subpar work behavior needs to be corrected. 4/🧵I have had multiple stewards recently fully presenting cases to my union's arbitration review committee. In the past chief stewards have done this. They are handling cases from investigation all the way to preparing the arbitration file. Multiple stewards can do this. I know of union local's where ONLY the chief steward(s) even present grievances starting with the very first grievance steps they have

1/🧵 I'm a chief steward in my union local and we've been working all year on making our stewards feel confident and competent handling things on their own as far as they can. That increases our capacity and means we can load up on the employer and increase the cost to them of f*cking up by making sure they have to actually deal with it. Many hands make lighter work.

My current work task - writing comments on the appalling Toondah Harbour development proposal EIS, is dominating my life right now.
The EIS is massive -5000 pages- so I've been reaching out to experts in various aspects of it (marine ecology, fisheries, restorations, offsets) and my gratitude at how great this community of #moretonbay #stewards is immense. But I'm also SO SADDENED by how many have said "thank you for doing this because I can't/wouldn't be permitted".
Scientists, businesses, whoever....we're too far down the track for this. Writing expert comment on an EIS isn't inherently "political" but you know what is? Letting the development-crazy status quo continue unchallenged
