St George is often associated with fertility - he is sometimes depicted in green or surrounded by tendrils of vegetation. This may relate to an old belief that links dragons with water - in some St George legends the dragon lives by a lake. The idea was that the hero kills the dragon - thereby releasing the water the beast has been hoarding up - enabling the crops to grow. #folklore #mythology #StGeorgesDay #history
