It coincides with the celebration of the winter solstice, the shortest day of the calendar year. Like much of European folklore and even religion, the focus is on the annual struggle between darkness and light. Falling in the season of advent … shepherds begin to come down from the highlands or from faraway fields into towns with their musical instruments and players, always in pairs, one on a simple recorder flute and the other, il Zampognaro or bagpipe player, with his handmade goatskin bagpipe. An ancient sign that the transumanza shepherds have returned to their families for Christmas.
