My garden wasn't great this summer due to a cold, rainy spring that messed with germination and seedling survival. However, I did get an amazing crop of cinderella pumpkins. (Rouge Vif d’Etampes) They are huge and take up a fair amount of room to store. I baked one up to see if it is worth it dehydrating and powdering the puree. Turns out more than half a huge pumpkin makes about 1 cup of powder. Incredibly space saving but will have to get back to you on whether it is good re-hydrated. Meanwhile, I saved some puree to make this yeast bread. It's so delish!

This past week I've been fighting a brutal stomach virus. I have repeatedly thought that, although I am fine and have the help I need, what if this happens during a societal structural breakdown? I can't stress enough how important hygiene is. This kind of virus (norovirus most likely) is highly contagious from surfaces, food, drink and stays contagious from 10 days to 2 weeks after symptoms appear. (there are conflicting info on how long, I've read as long as 3 weeks) It spreads rapidly and symptoms appear very quickly. Aside from the sudden and violent purging, the body pain- face, back, hips and legs- is debilitating. This is a disease that kills elderly and babies, it is potentially that severe. If you were out somewhere and couldn't get home or help, you could be in serious danger.
Keeping your hands impeccably clean, being sure of food and water sources and keeping your environment clean is essential. Having disinfecting cleaning products in your stock of supplies can prevent future illness. I usually use simple green, borax and Castile soaps for cleaning but I also have stronger disinfecting cleaners for deep clean situations. After an illness in the house, using a strong disinfecting cleaner on all countertops, bathrooms, and floors can prevent spreading the virus to others.
Stocking up on bar soap is a good practice for personal hygiene. I can buy it in bulk from a local soap maker at a discount but I also know the method of making soap. If you intent to make soap you must have a supply of lye and any kind of fat. For me, it's easier to store up a couple of year's supply of bar soap. It would also make good gifts or bartering. So remember, whether you are stocking up for winter storms or civil unrest, think of all the ways you need to stay safe.
