Here's a short piece reflecting on experiences and emotions from a recent hike. Originally published in The Stoic, it opens up the question what a Stoic sense of joy can include

Here's my next bit of commentary on Epictetus' Enchiridion, this one about a chapter "near and dear to my heart, because it reminds me of when I first started studying philosophy, and did not follow Epictetus advice"

“But there is no reason to live and no limit to our miseries if we let our fears predominate.” —SENECA, MORAL LETTERS, 13.12b
Your choices and actions are the only things that you control, so you decide to follow particular principles in your life.

“No one is crushed by Fortune, unless they are first deceived by her . . . those who aren’t pompous in good times, don’t have their bubbles burst with change. Against either circumstance, the stable person keeps their rational soul invincible, for it’s precisely in the good times they prove their strength against adversity.” —SENECA, ON CONSOLATION TO HELVIA, 5.4b, 5b–6

"It is with life as it is with a play — it matters not how long the action is spun out, but how good the acting is. It makes no difference at what point you stop. Stop whenever you choose; only see to it that the closing period is well turned.”
Seneca, Moral Letters, 77.20b

@janriemer I think most people don’t like, or want to think for themselves. They’d rather outsource this to the masses.
Seneca used to say
“Do you ask me what you should regard as especially to be avoided? I say, crowds; for as yet you cannot trust yourself to them with safety.”
And I agree with him. Developing self, and critical thinking, is the one things you can do to improve your life and well being.
