So think about this.
The Roman Empire that #MarcusAurelius ruled so ably no longer exists ...
... but the philosophy he inherited from #Epictetus and codified for the ages (a #philosophy powerfully described in this video) endures.
"You could leave life right now. Let that determine what you do and say and think."

How Would You Define Stoicism in One Sentence?
Stoic philosophy is an elegant, versatile school of thought that can’t be summed up with just a few words. But if you were forced to describe Stoicism in one simple sentence, what would you write? We asked some well-known Stoic thinkers, and here’s what they said:

I distrust anyone who quotes the #Stoics. Most of the time, it’s because #Stoic #philosophy feeds into toxic #masculinity—and in my experience, atextual Stoic quotes are most often perpetrated by white men. Surprise!!! White men, quoting other white men abouting about the benefits of avoiding their emotions and avoiding being upset by things around them? Weird.

This year I've decided I will look into the #Stoics especially #Epictetus. This is from his "The Enchiridion".
I figure, why go to the East when the West also has Zen like offerings that more naturally fit Western mindsets? Besides, for me it is going back to my cultural roots.
[Pascal] “objects, however, to the assumption, common among ancient philosophers, that human nature was prefectible without the need for God’s grace.”
How grace works in conjunction to human effort is an ongoing debate in Christian theology to this very day.
My take: the ancient #Stoics are wrong in their teaching that we can do anything without God’s help. Most #Christians are wrong in asserting that God does not work in the life of unbelievers. God is at work, quite probably, in every human being. God’s grace operates in our lives well before our faith in Him allows us to consciously tap on divine resources.

Attention is a special kind of resource -- more precious than #money or #time. #Attention is that from which all things flow -- what we pay attention to becomes our #reality. The #Stoics and the #Buddhists have it right, then, that the best investments one can make relate to enlarging awareness of one's attention.

If you haven't figured it out by now, in addition to being all about #DevOps and #GitHub, I have been diving into the #stoics, as well as #mindfulness, for the past few years.
One of my resources around #stocism is the book "The Daily Stoic". Today's quote, from #seneca, really got to me:
"Many times an old man has no other evidence besides his age to prove he has lived a long time"
At 50 years old, this kinda hits home hard for me.

The only thing we have control over is our own thoughts and actions. When we focus on improving ourselves and living according to our values, we gain confidence and inner peace.
