#OTD in 1942, the village of #Lidice in The Reich Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia (now Czechia) was completely destroyed. The men were shot, the women and children sent to death camps.

Hitler wanted everything Lidice, even the memory of it, to die. Miners in #StokeOnTrent disagreed. Later that year, they started a campaign to raise funds, and Lidice was rebuilt after the war.

#StokeOnTrent's Potteries #Museum has got a grant to fund an exhibition about #Lidice, among other things.

This is great news on the surface. I'll be very pleased to see a permanent exhibition about the Lidice story.

But not long ago, the council slashed the budget, made staff redundant, and reduced opening hours. Given all that, will they be able to maintain the new extension?

The other archives in Staffordshire, the City Archives in Stoke on Trent are also closing in January until the autumn of 2023. As a lot of my research is in Staffordshire I am having to advise clients that it may not be possible to undertake their research until late 2023 if archive access is needed.
