Sculpted plant capital on a column by the door of Queen's Park Govanhill Parish Church in Glasgow. I love how, in places, you can see through the surface discolouration to the natural redness of sandstone underneath.

The seal, first used in 1359, is "an extraordinary depiction of female vision, & female faith in the importance of education, & a woman's power & ability to accomplish that vision... We have one of the world's greatest stonecutters a mile up the road, who also happens to be a woman."

Sculpted sign beside the door of the old Temple Police Station on Bearsden Road in Glasgow.
I've passed this small red sandstone building hubdreds of times over the years on my way in and out of Glasgow, but I never really gave it a second look until I noticed this sign carved on it the other day.

The Green Man on a building on Lancaster Terrace in Glasgow.
Representing spring and rebirth, the Green Man appears on a surprisingly large number of buildings in Glasgow, but this foliate version is the best representation of him I've so far found in the city.

The church was designed by McKissack and Rowan in a mix of Romanesque and Scots Gothic styles and was built in the 1880s. Only its facade and steeple remain standing.

Today's animal from Glasgow's architecture is this fantastic owl from the Stewart Memorial Fountain in Kelvingrove Park. I love that its depicted with an item of prey clasped in its beak. The relief sculpture of a heron catching an eel in the background is pretty good too!

Chariot-racing along Gordon Street in Glasgow.
Love this piece of sculpture and I've not seen anything like it elsewhere in Glasgow. As far as I can work out it's of Eos, the goddess of the dawn riding a quadriga (a chariot pulled by four horses) and bringing light to the new day.

Welp...This was an experiment of sorts and I worked on it far too long and should have put it in the discard pile and moved on to something else. But here it is. It's 5.5 x 3.5 x 1.75 inches (14 x 9 x4.5 centimeters). I just don't feel comfortable with the design or the execution but at least I learned something which is always a plus. Sedimentary stone of some type I think.

Whenever I see this face, I'm always curious to find out more about who carved it and why it's there. As far as I know, it's been there (along with at least one other one) since the mid-1990s.
