Absolutely love these heads on Langside Halls in Glasgow, scuplted by John Thomas in the mid-1800s. They represent the spirits of four of the great rivers of Britain (the Clyde, the Thames, the Tweed and the Humber). There is also a fifth one representing the Severn, which is not included here.

The Green Man, a mythological figure who is a symbol of rebirth and spring, over a tenement doorway on Spean Street in Cathcart, Glasgow.

While not common, similar representations of The Green Man can be found on other Glasgow buildings.

I love the boat prows that decorate so many of Glasgow's older buildings, but this one is particulalry good.

It's also the only one I've seen containing three of the four symbols of Glasgow (I'm sure there must be a bell in there somewhere as well, but I just can't find it!).

This symbol, shown here above the door of 2 Clarendon Place, is one which appears on quite a few Glasgow buildings.

It's called a Cornucopia or Horn of Plenty, and it's a very ancient symbol dating back to Ancient Greece. It consists of a goat's horn overflowing with fruits, nuta or flowers. It is generally used to represent affluence or abundance.

Beautiful stonework above the door of Ocean Chambers, 190 West George Street, Glasgow.

I love the details here, especially the central lighthouse and the walruses (or is that walri?) on either side, even if the one on the left has lost a tusk in the 120 years or so since it was originally carved.
