When needed (and by request), I also help fix/restore/upgrade machines. This 8 year old Lenovo G50-80 got a new SSD and an upgrade to Windows 10 with updated drivers and BIOS.

I believe that everyone deserves to have a serviceable computer and the good thing is we don't even need to keep producing new computers to achieve this goal.

4. Ease of use. I could've just used the stock Lubuntu theme but the user of this laptop is an older fellow who is already used to Windows. By using a theme that he's familiar with, I hope to make his transition to Linux an easy one (even if he doesn't know it's actually Linux). 😆

2. Better security. This laptop won't be able to upgrade to Win11. Win8.1 is already unsupported so older computers running Win8.1 and below won't receive security updates anymore. The same will happen to Win10 in a few years.

1. Improved performance. Before the upgrade, this laptop was sluggishly running Windows 7. With all the Windows bloat, its 4 GB of single channel RAM and hard drive could not keep up. With the upgrade, it's running smooth like butter.

Just a regular laptop running Windows 10? Nope.

This is actually Xubuntu with a Windows 10 theme running on a 10+ year old laptop with a 2nd gen i5 (released 2011) processor. Aside from a new OS, the upgrade included repasting the thermal paste, installing an SSD, and adding an extra 4GB of RAM.

Now why would I do this? A couple of reasons really.

and any other vendor should be forced by law to their devices once they reach end of life, haven't received an update in a year, or aren't supported anymore.
