And yes, you'll find parallels between STC and Hero's Journey ... and Harmon's #StoryCircle and "How to Write a Movie in 21 Days" and even the sequence of Tarot trumps (ha!), as all of these, one way or another, are seeking to make mythic story structure more approachable. Take what works and ignore the rest!

There is in fact nothing revolutionary about the Monomyth except that it introduced the idea of a "story circle" to the English speaking world. Its popularity is likely linked to our predisposition for stories about the intellectual with a grand theory. A single hero rather than a collection of contributors.
