A helpful post about various kinds of scenes in a story from the website Helping Writers Become Authors by the authoritative K.M. Weiland.
I enjoyed her perspective on the pairing of certain scenes (scene/sequel is the classic example).

I'm definitely also a subscriber to @JessMahler's Growth Centered Stories. Not out of any intentionality, but that my creative process depends on it: to figure out what happens next, I ask my characters "what do you really not want to happen" which usually hits their insecurities, weaknesses, and strongly held beliefs, aka their points for growth.

Bound By his Oath as an Example of Growth-Centered Story Structure
The other week I wrote about story structures. Specifically, I wrote about how and why I rejected the 'universal' 5-act, conflict-centered structure. And what I'm using instead: a growth-centered story structure.
This week I want to look at what growth-centered story structure IS and give an example of how it can work.

I've enjoyed the Atomic Robo comic ( https://www.atomic-robo.com/ ) almost, but not quite, from the beginning of its run. The last couple of blog posts associated with the comic have been about the general structure of an Atomic Robo adventure, and I have enjoyed those as well.

RT @Carmunist: "Because of the tragic story shape, the rising tension is more of a gradual easing of tension, a strengthening of bonds, especially of her love for Matthew, such that when he dies, her loss is truly transformative."

RT @darlingaxe: "Given the climax, the true inciting incident is Anne’s first ride home from the train station with Matthew—this is when their initial bond forms and Anne’s goal is set: she is determined not to lose this newfound parental relationship."

RT @Carmunist: "At the end of the novel, Holden is a changed person. He has gained a deeper understanding of himself and the world around him, and although he isn’t out of the woods entirely, he is better prepared to face the adult world."

That's about it for the introduction to "Gravel's Run" (see thread). At this moment, it's mostly in my head. Still working on some #worldbuilding details and overall #storystructure. Struggling with confidence that I can put it into words and make it interesting to read for anyone but myself. But I really know that #ishouldbewriting. Favorite this toot for my encouragement.

The lovely discussions of GLASS ONIONE and its playful story structure are a great prompt for me to re-share my post on the similar structure in KNIVES OUT.
It's a lot of fun, and also a great way to puzzle through MICE — the idea of story arcs focusing on Milieu, Idea, Character, or Event:

I have been reading John Yorke's Into the Woods and I found that my Work in Progress turns out to follow his Five Act Structure. !!
Particularly if I change my mind about exactly what is the real turning point of the story.
I blogged briefly.
ATM I loosely outline and do a loose first draft - second draft work to a tighter plan. I can conceive now plotting more.

I am wrestling with story structure, which has always been an issue.
I write my characters so they and their relationships come alive - out of that the plot in the first draft usually changes.
Finding John Yorke's Into the Woods useful partly because he says many people introduce the structure by instinct and all the books on this are essentially saying the same thing in different ways (and with different degrees of One True Way.)

youtube suggested a video on #StoryStructure and I couldn't resist watching it.
Now I learned in 30 min how easy it is to develop a story in a very very short time and it even becomes fun!
And still you can pant, plant and discovery write as much as you want. Or #plot and construct. Also very inspiring for editing what you already have.

I'll be teaching an online class for Stanford Continuing Studies, "Plotting Outside the Box: Alternative Story Structures." Foregrounded is Ursula K. Le Guin's "The Carrier Bag Theory." Because why can't we have something other than the singular hero's journey?
I learned about #FourCornerOpposition today and realized I was missing a corner in one of my arcs. This turned into an Aha! moment that answered a few other open questions as well :) Added _The Anatomy of Story_ to my list.
Wrote 2514 words in two #Pomodoro on this, total of 48447. I expect to finish up tomorrow.

I spent a couple hours today whiteboarding the other two POV characters’ #StoryStructure. They still need work, but it’s good having these written down for future tweaking.
1672 words today, bringing me to a total of 31030 words.
I have three main POV characters with their own arc. I could structure it so each is on a #FourActStructure with the beats hitting at the same time (or subsequent chapters). Or I could stagger them. Or go #polyrhythm and do overlapping three-, four- and five- act structures that have their own cadences but all come together at the end. That last one seems intriguing but I’m not sure if it’s too much math.
Anyone have thoughts?
