Yesterday Sat 18 Feb was the day of the "Strâo" in #BurghHaamstede in the Dutch coastal province of #Zeeland. It's an early season beach ride with (work) horses, often decorated with wreaths and colourful pompoms. This was the 2nd one, 4 more to go in other villages. De eeuwenoude Zeeuwse traditie de strao (straô-rieën: strand-rijden) is vorig jaar door Janne van Gilst vastgelegd. De foto’s maken deel uit van haar boek Strao, dat eind april verschijnt. Tijdens de #strao rijden mensen op versierde paarden de branding in om de boze geesten van de winter na een lange periode op stal uit de paardenbenen te verdrijven. #NRC #Zeeland #SchouwenDuiveland
