Isidor and Ida Strauss, NYC residents, perished in the Titanic disaster in 1912. Isidor gave away his lifeboat seat to a younger man. Ida, refusing to leave her husband, gave up her place to her maid. The couple were last seen holding hands before being swept into the sea. Their memorial is across the street from where they used to live.
